Radio Mystery Theater Revisited

When I was a kid, I had an old radio that I listened to before going to sleep. If I remember right, it had vacuum tubes. Yes, it was that old. My favorite show was the Radio Mystery Theater. Last night, Tyson and I were driving home from a movie and something made me think of that radio show. I told Tyson about the sound of the creaking door and how scary it was for me listening late at night and how I'd hide under my blanket but wouldn't turn off the radio.

So, I started looking around on the internet. Sure enough, I found some sites with MP3 files of the original broadcasts. This is one of the sites with some of the original shows you can download for free.

Jenny and Amanda are already fans. Last night we layed out our pillows and covers on the floor of the study and listened to the "Dracula" episode. Sarah kept getting closer and closer to Christine and I. Before I knew it, she was cuddling on the floor between the two of us saying "I'm scared daddy!"

This was one of the episodes that I remember vividly and it scared the bejeebees out of me. There's something about radio shows that frees the imagination to run free and wild with ideas and images. Dracula never looked so scary as I imagined him in that episode.

Now my kids share my dread...
