Lyrics: Sarah McLachlan Tune

Was listening to some old music and caught this oldie but goodie.
Has a lot of meaning...
I've always been a sucker for the piano.
This one is no exception.

"Do What You Have to Do"

What ravages of spirit
conjured this temptuous rage
created you a monster
broken by the rule of love
and fate has lead you through it
you do what you have to do
and fate has led you through it
you do what you have to do

...And I have the sense to recognize that
I don't know how to let you go
Every moment marked
with apparitions of your soul
I'm ever swiftly moving
trying to escape this desire
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
but I have the sense to recognize
that I don't know how
to let you go
I don't know how
to let you go

A glowing ember
burning hot
burning slow
deep within I'm shaken by the violence
of existing for only you

I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
and I have sense to recognize but
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go

"To me, it's about two people who are in love but can't be together for many reasons. They are torn by obligations, what they have to do, and thier love. They try to escape it but are drawn back over and over. Their love threatened to consume them both but there's nothing they can do."

"For me, it's about one of my dearest friends, Cassy, who died suddenly at the age of 19 from a heart condition..."And I have the sense to recognize that I don't know how to let you go"...... because it has taken me a long time to let her go. it has been 4 years now, and still I miss her so much..."every moment marked with apparitions of your soul ".... because everywhere I look, every song I hear, every thing I do, there are reminders of Cassy and times we spent together..and I have this yearning to be near her, just to have my friend in my life again, but I know I can't go with her as she has moved on to somewhere that I know it's not my time to visit yet, so "I do what I have to do" to get by knowing that I can never hear her beautiful laughter again in this lifetime..."

"This song is so much deeper than you think. The words are soooo powerful, from start to finish. "what ravages of spirit conjured this temptuous rage?" It's not only about not being able to let go, it's about the love being forbidden, or it wouldn't be temptuous, It would just be rage. "Deep within I'm shaking by the violence of existing for only you."

Powerful stuff.
